The December issue of Inyanda Community News is Out

The December edition of Inyanda Community News shines a light on rural realities and inspiring collective action across South Africa and beyond. Featured articles include:

Rural Schoolchildren at Risk

A new study reveals that farm schools face a dual crisis: pesticide drift and unsafe water. With 14 out of 18 schools located near spraying zones, children are exposed to toxic chemicals during lessons. Water testing showed that more than half of schools had contaminated supplies, leading to illness and weakened learning outcomes. Researchers warn of long-term cognitive impacts, calling this a form of environmental injustice. Communities are demanding pesticide-free zones, safe municipal water, and a shift toward agroecology.

TCOE Joins Global Agroecology Convening in Brazil

The Trust for Community Outreach and Education (TCOE) joined 90 delegates worldwide at the first IPA-Global Convening. South Africa’s delegation showcased farmer-led research and agroecology initiatives, aligning with global movements for climate-resilient food systems. Lessons from Brazil reinforced agroecology as both technical practice and political project.

Rural Voices at the G20 Summit

At the historic Johannesburg G20 Summit, TCOE amplified rural perspectives through exhibitions, films, and participatory events. Themes of seed sovereignty, food justice, and climate resilience were central, reminding global leaders that small-scale producers are experts, not victims.

Inyanda’s Ongoing Struggle for Water Justice

Since 2021, Inyanda has campaigned for clean drinking water and access to land with water for production. Recent case studies continue to expose systemic failures while mobilizing communities to demand inclusion in municipal water planning and national policy.
