" A Peoples´ SADC: Myth or Reality?"

Press release

(Maputo, August 9, 2012) – The peoples of the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in coalition with the Southern African People's Solidarity Network (SAPSN) and the Peoples' Dialogue, announce the "Summit of the Peoples of the SADC 2012", an alternative event parallel to the Summit of the Chiefs of State of the region. The Peoples' Summit will meet from August 13 to 16, 2012.

The Summit will bring together more than 500 people, among them activists, popular organizations and social movements from Mozambique, South Africa, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, including peasants, fisherfolk, landless, rural and industrial workers, rural women, women's movements, unemployed, and social and environmental activists. In Mozambique, the National Peasant Movement (UNAC) and Via Campesina are joining with other civil society organizations to host the event.

Hoping to reflect about "the SADC that the people would like to see", the Summit will discuss questions such as:

  • Democracy and Human Rights,
  • Youth and Unemployment,
  • Management and Seizure of Natural Resources,
  • Food Security vs Food Sovereignty,
  • Gender and Women's Rights,
  • A Human Rights Perspective on the Extractive Industry and mega projects,
  • HIV and Health, among other topics.

The organization of the Peoples' Summit identified these topics to be considered burning questions in the region and in Mozambique in particular.

Also the Peoples of SADC expect to address to the Head of States of region the message that "nothing about us (the people) without us".

The Peoples' Summit will take place in Mumemo in the village of Marracuene from August 13 to 15 and in Maputo on August 16, 2012.

The Peoples' Summit of the SADC has been held every year since 2006 parallel to the Summit of the Heads of State in the country where the summit takes place.
